It Started With Website Design

Back in the early 2000s (check out the phone and “portable” radio, lol) I decided to go to college after finishing my time in the Army.

It was a trade school where I was able to immediately practice my skills I learned that particular quarter. I joined that college because it would not only teach me website development, it would also teach me the foundations of design as well.

College wasn’t cheap, especially private college. So I immediately began looking for business owners to work with. Keep in mind, this was before Social Media was a thing. MySpace was only one year old when I began!

To make a long story short, I began working with local small businesses. As time went on, the business owners I worked with began asking me about Marketing their business. That wasn’t a part of my college curriculum so I learned it as I went along.

Over time I combined Website Design with Marketing and hosting, creating a complete solution for those interested. By this time, I was close to graduating with my Bachelor of Arts degree and I made the decision to pursue my Master of Science.

CHANGING TIMES IN WEBSITE DESIGN

As time went on, my skillset grew, I attained my Master of Science degree, and I even taught Website Design at the college level. It was a great time to be a freelancer.

By this time, Social Media, specially Facebook™, was prevalent. WordPress has dominated the website marketshare, and the economy started to bounce back from the 2008 recession. It was a completely different atmosphere than it was when I started.

Finally, after doing this for for over a decade-and-a-half, and after a few other attempts, I created CarlosBuiltThis.

Normally, the story would be over, but another curve ball was about to hit everyone, knocking us all down.

By now I had been married for ten years and my daughter decided to pop into this world. Having already mastered working from home, it made everyday “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day” and I love every minute of it.

But the pandemic changed the rules again. Those that refused to change, died. By March of 2020, over 100,000 businesses had permanently closed.

Around this time is when I decided to start blogging what I know to help new businesses start easier and faster, as well as help established businesses learn about what’s out there to help them. I want to help as many businesses as I can, because the small business is the backbone of our country.

If you actually read this far, I thank you for taking that time. I know you’re busy. I hope these articles help you in some way.
